This episode of the show was titled ‘Profiling 101‘ and it was received with mixed reactions. The first thing is that there’s just one more episode to go after this, another thing is that Prentiss would be leaving the show after this season. So some fans would have felt that being the second to the last episode, they should not have gone the direction they did with this episode. To them it looked more or less like a filler which could be called a waste of time and opportunity.
But it is not as if it was a wasted episode. Yes the whole team went to a college to give some form of lecture on profiling and there was a case that may not have been in par with their expectation but it was quite an interesting approach. With all the action happening in this series, fans tend to forget that it is more a show where wits win rather than brawn.
These guys are pitted against some criminals who they have to out think to outsmart. That is there area of expertise; profiling, working with their heads as well as their gun. It is not a serial on SWAT. The action is an addition or something that happens along the way of solving a crime but the engine room of what they do is more intellectual. This is why going to a college to share their hands on knowledge of criminology and profiling in particular falls in line with the show and what they are all about.
Beyond that this episode was Rossi-centric and it was nice because he is a character much loved by fans. The psychopath who only releases details of his next victim to Rossi on his birthdays is sick. It would be perfectly understandable if they are crime fighters actually experience some kind of burn out because of what they are constantly exposed to. And the way he went about. Trying to do everything the man wanted is a testament to his dedication to his job.
They only had one case to deal with in this episode and they played off each other’s strength to resolve it. But it looked like they had room for more than one case but this episode did not follow the regular format and it could be that the writers have something up their sleeve.
Prentiss is not going to be killed off as some has presumed even though she requested to be written off the show. There has always been mixed reaction towards her character by fans but those that root for her do so with passion. It would be sad to see her go but the good news is that she would have been given an exit plan that would leave room for her to come back again even if it’s as a guest star. It was an interesting episode.
